37SHORT DESCRIPTION: Compass, made by Robert MERRILL (*1804 +1876) of New York. Brass bowl in gimbal, with glass lid, in wooden box with lid. The card is divided in 64 points, one needle. The name of the maker, on the card, has been partly stuck over with a small label with the word ‘Larmour,’. According to the Collection file, this compass was attributed to the Chesapeake Bay schooner WAVE. REMARKS: The lead weight in the bottom of the bowl is loose. The lid has decorative circles engraved in, obviously done by an owner. ADDITIONAL INSTRUMENT: SEE M.V. BREWINGTON, THE PEABODY MUSEUM COLLECTION OF NAVIGATING INSTRUMENTS. SALEM, 1963, PP.135-136 & COLLECTION FILE. GEOGRAPHICAL NAME: CHESAPEAKE BAY. TIME-SPACE: 1850-1870. NOTES: Objects 1982.54.01-.15 were purchased from a Stephenson's Auction Gallery Special Nautical sale. The materials were listed as being from the collection of Donald F. Stewart. Mr. Stewart was the former director of the USS Constellation and was instrumental in getting the ship designated as a historical landmark. However, Mr. Stewart was a controversial figure who became known for fabricating documents and historical information. Unless it can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt the attribution of all of the items associated with this accession should be considered suspect.CL12989
